In 2008 the U.S Mint expanded its Gold Buffalo program to include collectible uncirculated pieces which are struck on burnished blanks. Burnished coins are smooth to the touch and display striking detail. Note that the U.S. Mint does not use the term “burnished.” Instead, the mint refers to these coins simply as “uncirculated.” It’s the numismatic community that continues to use the term burnished in reference to coins produced through the special minting process. These special burnished coins also bear the "W" mint mark on the obverse. The mint produced just under 10,000 of these quarter-ounce Gold Buffalo’s and they eliminated the uncirculated Gold Buffalo program in the same year. Making this year, the only year of production. This is a must own for any collector or investor.

- The obverse features James Earle Fraser's classic portrait of an American Indian, which was first seen on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, and the reverse features the American bison, adapted from the Buffalo Nickel whose original design was inspired by Black Diamond, a buffalo living in the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century.
