In 1999 the US Mint produced a record high for Gold Eagles. To this day, the record number of gold bullion coins produced during 1999 has not been surpassed. Particularly in demand were the one-ounce and one-tenth-ounce denominations suggesting investment demand from both ends of the spectrum. The surge in demand was attributed to the growing uncertainty surrounding the new millennium also known as Y2K. The mint produced nearly 3 million one-tenth ounce Gold Eagles and only 902 pieces have been certified perfect 70 by PCGS. This is a must-own for any collection and is a key date in the series.
