Own a Remarkable American Relic with this 1886-S $5 Gold Coin
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1840 until his passing in 1844, this “Liberty Head” or “Coronet Head” coin beautifully highlights the artist’s heavy Neoclassical influence.
Launched in 1839, this new half eagle design followed the Classic Head and preceded the Indian Head. The reverse of the coin remained the same, aside from changing the value of "5 D." to "FIVE D." The obverse features Liberty’s portrait with her hair tied in a bun and secured by a string of beads, as well as a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty.”
As signified by the S after the date, this 1886-S $5 gold coin was minted in San Francisco. The Liberty Head holds the distinction of being the only single design to be minted at seven US Mints: Carson City, Charlotte, Dahlonega, Denver, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco.

This particular Liberty Head half eagle 1886 5 dollar gold coin is truly remarkable. Not only does it boast a Mint State 64 PCGS grade, but it has received a green sticker from the Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), a trusted coin certification company with extremely stringent standards.
Less than half of coins submitted to the CAC receive the prestigious “green bean” sticker. The San Francisco Mint struck over three million 1886-S $5 gold coins in 1886, and only 79 MS64 pieces have been stickered by the CAC. To say this coin is rare is an understatement.
